Commercial Electricity Meters Explained

Having the correct commercial electricity meter is essential for accurate billing, better energy monitoring, and improved cost control. Many businesses choose to install a new meter at the same time as switching electricity suppliers to ensure they are on the most suitable tariff.

While many companies continue using standard electricity meters, there are often more efficient and cost-effective meter options available, depending on your usage and business type. Choosing the right meter can help you better understand consumption patterns and avoid unnecessary energy costs.

What Is an MPAN Status?

What is MPAN?

What Is an MPAN Status?

An MPAN can fall into one of four main statuses: Live, Disconnected, New, or De-Energised.

MPAN (Meter Point Administration Number) is a unique reference number assigned to every electricity supply point in the UK. It is essential for identifying your business electricity supply and is required when switching suppliers, installing a new meter, or arranging a new connection.

Your MPAN status shows the current condition of your electricity supply and confirms whether power is live, inactive, or requires further work before electricity can be supplied. Understanding your MPAN status helps avoid delays and ensures a smoother business electricity setup.

MPAN Status and Next Steps

Live

The electricity supply is fully active. The service cable and fuse are installed, and the meter is ready for use.

Next Steps:
No further action is required. You can proceed with comparing business electricity tariffs to secure the most competitive rate.

Disconnected

The service cable has been removed, and the existing MPAN can no longer be reused. This status is commonly referred to as siteworks.

Next Steps:
You will need to contact your Distribution Network Operator (DNO) to arrange the installation of a new service cable. Once completed, a new MPAN will be issued. After this, a new electricity meter can be installed at the premises.

New

A new MPAN has been created but is awaiting supplementary information, such as a Profile Class and Meter Time-Switch Code (MTSC). The service cable may not yet be installed, but installation is scheduled.

Next Steps:
This status is often referred to as energised. The MPAN can usually be activated three to four weeks prior to cable installation, allowing energy quotes and meter installation to be arranged in advance.

De-Energised

The service cable remains in place; however, the fuse has been removed and the electricity meter is no longer active. This typically occurs when a supplier removes a meter and updates the national ECOES database.

Next Steps:
You must contact the supplier that removed the meter. They will need to request an update through ECOES to reinstate the electricity supply before further action can be taken.

How to Check Your MPAN Status

Confirming your MPAN status before comparing business electricity suppliers is strongly recommended. It ensures any required preparatory work is identified early, saving time and avoiding delays.

Your MPAN can usually be found:

  • On a recent electricity bill

  • By contacting your current electricity supplier

  • By speaking with our expert connections team

Once your MPAN status is confirmed, we can advise on the most appropriate next steps, whether that involves switching suppliers, installing a new meter, or arranging a new electricity connection.
